Fruit and vegetable consumption per capita in Europe

2023-05-25

The World Heath Organization recommends a minimum daily comsuption of 400gr of fruit and vegetable per capita in order to maintain a healthy diet, which is equivalent to five portions. Even though the pandemic accomplished better awareness and an increase in the consumption of fresh produce, there is still room to grow.

According to Freshfel Europe’s Consumption Monitor, fruit and vegetable consumption is still 10% below the minimum ratio per day recommended by the WHO. At the same time, one out three people doesn’t consume it at all.

On the other side, the five european countries with the highests consumption index are Belgium, Portugal, UK, Italy and Spain. Eurostat data shows that 84.8% of Belgians consume at least one portion of fruit and vegetables everyday. Followed by the Portuguese with a 79.3% and English with a 78.3%. United Kingdom also stands out for having the highest percentage of people (32.9%) who consume 5 or more portions a day.

These statistics show us the importance of supporting educational and communication campaigns to encourage families towards a greater intake of fresh produce. Among the benefits that should be highlated are the feasibility of a diet with a great nutritional value at affordable prices; as well as the contribution of a plant-based diet to environmental efforts in terms of reduction of CO2 emissions.
