61 Young Adults Graduate as Technical Assistants in the Banana Industry

Reybanpac and the Wong Foundation celebrated the graduation of a new generation of young people who completed their training as Banana Technical Assistants. This third graduating class included 61 young adults, 41% of whom were women, reaffirming both organizations’ commitment to inclusive technical training.

This program, which also receives support from the Albert Heijn Foundation, is part of AGROFUTURO—a living model of multisectoral cooperation that, since 2021, has been connecting technical education with real development opportunities in the region, demonstrating that technical training can serve as a true bridge to employment. Currently, 77% of AGROFUTURO graduates are already working, and 90% remain employed two years later, working in various strategic sectors such as banana farming, livestock, and, now, the forestry industry.

“I have a high school diploma, and many companies require years of experience to hire you. With this course, you gain that experience and, with it, more job opportunities—and even the chance to advance to a better position,” said Guadalupe Espinoza, one of the graduates.

This 22-year-old described the experience as “unforgettable”: “You learn a lot about the processes involved in banana production, from cultivation to packaging and subsequent shipment abroad. This allows us to continue strengthening our knowledge and moving forward with the goals we set for ourselves in life.”

During his remarks, Ricardo Romero, executive director of the Wong Foundation, emphasized that AGROFUTURO not only provides technical knowledge but also supports each student throughout their entire training process, integrating academic learning, hands-on fieldwork, and real-world experiences within companies. “Today we have fulfilled our part; now you must continue building your path with honesty, discipline, respect, and commitment,” he said.

The stories that begin today reflect a conviction that the Wong Foundation has held for more than three decades: when education reaches a region, opportunities, development, and hope follow.

Every young person graduating today represents much more than just a new technician. They represent a family expanding its opportunities, a community strengthening its future, and a sector that continues to grow thanks to the talent of its people.
