The task of promoting the consumption of fruits and vegetables for a healthy life.

2020-11-27

We are approaching 2021, a year declared by FAO as the “International Year of Fruits and Vegetables”. The objectives set out with this declaration now have even greater relevance with the scenario we are experiencing as a result of the pandemic.

For decades there have been efforts by various actors to promote better health care and encourage good eating habits. Since the COVID19 pandemic, there has been a stronger trend in certain markets to prefer fresh products. However, advocacy and education are still necessary to achieve greater global awareness of the importance of fruits and vegetables for human health. Good nutrition contributes to developing better defenses, to having good energy levels, to reducing the risk of diseases or to heal more quickly, to an optimal growth of children; generally speaking, it allows us to feel good.

But it is not enough to educate, populations must also be guaranteed access to quality food. The fight against hunger has several edges. One of them is to strengthen the role of farmers to promote productivity, but also to improve the quality of life of small producers and their families.
On the other hand, work must be done to reduce food loss and waste. FAO estimates that each year a third of the food produced or grown in the world is wasted as a result of actions or decisions of the members of the entire chain: suppliers, logistics, retailers, consumers. In this regard, it is vital that each link in the chain identifies how from its role it can contribute to the achievement of said objective.

For all this, it is important to establish public policies that favor the development of the agro-industrial sector and good commercial relations between countries. Likewise, the articulation and commitment of all the actors in the chain is relevant, since only from a joint effort will sustainable agriculture be achieved, as well as improving nutrition indices and reducing food waste.

The support of consumers is also essential, as their consumption habits are what dictate market trends and have a great influence on the demand for responsible practices.

For our part, we are honored to contribute to the nutrition of families around the world by supplying high quality bananas grown under good agricultural practices. We will maintain our commitment and corporate responsibility policies so that all the fruit we produce is used; to continue developing our circular economy plan; guarantee the progress and well-being of our workers; and we will remain open to collaborate with the various actors in the production chain in favor of sustainable agriculture.
