Good agricultural practices implemented by REYBANPAC for soil conservation

2024-07-04

July 7 is International Soil Conservation Day. This date aims to remember the importance of soil care for achieving sustainable agri-food systems and maintaining the environment's balance.

REYBANPAC is aware of the significance of fertile soil in fulfilling its mission of healthily nourishing the world with fresh high-quality bananas. Therefore, the company implements a management plan that includes cultural and biological practices.

In 2021, Reybanpac launched a pilot program for the application of microorganisms in its plantations. These microorganisms constitute the living parts of the soil and perform different functions, including those related to plant nutrition by transforming organic matter into inorganic nutrients that the roots can absorb. This initiative also improves the structure and physical properties of the soil.

Due to the good results obtained, in 2023 REYBANPAC established a biofactory at its facilities, in partnership with a supplier, where microorganisms are reproduced, stored, and distributed for application on farms. That year, microorganisms were applied to 37% of the company's banana hectares.

This eco-friendly program has also contributed to controlling pests and diseases in plants and roots, which in turn significantly reduced the use of nematicides.

INTEGRATED SOIL MANAGEMENT
Reybanpac’s practices for the care of soil health include cover planting, retentions to reduce soil erosion, plowing to improve aeration and root development, and liming to reduce soil acidity and increase nutrients. In 2023, the company planted in 20% of its hectares additional crops that protect the soil from erosion caused by climatic factors.

In addition, REYBANPAC optimizes the use of resources through precision agriculture. To do so, it conducts foliar and soil analyses to develop a fertilizer program that ensures an accurate supply according to the needs of its crops.

REYBANPAC is committed to offering quality bananas grown in an environmentally responsible manner. Proper care of the soil is one the main factors for sustainable agricultural production capable of providing the world with nutritious food, and therefore, it is a priority.
