Within the framework of Earth month, Reybanpac, producer and exporter of the Favorita banana, publishes its 2021 sustainability report.
Reybanpac's CEO, Vicente Wong, maintains that the results presented in this publication demonstrate the significant steps that the company has taken in recent years. " We have achieved carbon neutral certification from cradle to gate for our bananas, reduced water consumption in our agricultural production and fruit packing processes, and ensured the well-being for our people and their families by exceeding the living wage standard.”
The continuous improvement of processes is part of Reybanpac's philosophy. “We always seek to improve ourselves, that is what excellence and efficiency are all about. Through good agricultural practices and innovation, we work to achieve greater sustainability and productivity.” An example of this is that the company has achieved a significant reduction on pesticides of approximately 55% per kilo of active ingredient per hectare applied in the plantations. At the same time, the company has been progressively installing water recirculation plants in its packing stations. Through this system, the packing houses that already have these plants save 75.85% of m3 of water per day.
Regarding labor, Reybanpac points out that as part of its commitment to SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth) in 2021 it underwent a living wage compliance test by the auditor Ernst & Young, based on the Anker methodology. The result showed that Reybanpac’s 100% agricultural workforce is compensated at least 38% above the standard established for Ecuador by the aforementioned methodology.
The report also includes information on social responsibility programs developed through the Wong Foundation, which is part of the business group, and which is mainly focused on the field of education and the protection of biodiversity. The Wong Foundation manages 4 child development centers and 3 fully integrated educational centers that in 2021 benefited a total of 684 children and young people. The foundation also develops post-secondary technical education programs.
On the other hand, the Wong Foundation has under its protection the 110-hectare Río Palenque tropical rainforest, which is the habitat of a great diversity of fauna and flora.
According to Vicente Wong, “a company only grows and is sustained over time when its priorities are clear and it has a strategy with a long-term vision. At Reybanpac we have a permanent commitment to our workers, to the protection of the environment, to the strengthening of the communities that surround us and to the productive and economic growth of our country. Part of the added value that we offer our clients lies in the fact that they can count on a reliable business partner, responsible in its actions and that shares their same values. We are proud of what has been achieved so far, but we are even more excited about the challenges that lie ahead.”
