Samborondón, Ecuador.- On November 27, Vicente Wong participated in the “Entrepreneurial and Business Experience” panel, which was part of the ECUADOR 2025: A Propositive Vision business forum, an event organized by the Ecuadorian Export and Investment Promotion Corporation (CORPEI) and Andersen. The discussion was also attended by Veronique Chavanne, regional expert of IPD Hub Ecuador; Ramón Sosa, director of corporate affairs of Cargill; María José Jaramillo, manager of Grupasa, flexible packaging division; and Eduardo Egas, executive president of CORPEI (moderator).
In his speech, our CEO shared some keys to the sustainability of agribusiness companies such as, for example, having good control of costs and expenses, advancing in the value chain, and the implementation of technology, actions that have allowed Reybanpac to be a globally competitive company. Wong also emphasized the importance of corporate sustainability, especially the social and environmental pillars:
“At the end of the day, we are operating in communities, businesses are people and people must be happy to be productive and efficient. In that sense, there must be a model that touches health and education, and that is what we have been doing.”
As examples, he cited the company's medical centers that offer free health care for employees and their families, as well as the free educational programs in rural areas that Reybanpac carries out in conjunction with the Wong Foundation to train them and foster community leaders. Integrating these social actions into the business model has brought the organization important benefits, such as certifications that have opened the doors to access the European market, which is currently the most important market for Reybanpac.
A similar opinion was held by María José Jaramillo, from GRUPASA, who said that the social role of companies cannot be left aside:
“We cannot be oblivious to the reality that our country is living. The businessman has a great responsibility to play a leading role as an agent of change to help the neediest, the most vulnerable areas, where it is necessary for the businessman, with all his experience in the sector, to contribute value to the people. We must look after the country, which needs us to be more committed and focused every day”, he said.
Along the same lines, Ramón Sosa, from Cargill, stated that to achieve an inclusive and more prosperous Ecuador it is necessary to think of others, not only in one's plot of land, and to join efforts in the business sector. “Many think that the government must do everything, but when the chieftain does not take care of the tribe, the tribe takes care of the chieftain. Expecting that everything is going to come from the top down is not appropriate. Let's stop talking about what we don't agree on and instead let's unite on what we do agree on,” he said.
In the environmental area, Wong made a call to take care of resources that will be scarce in the future. “In Reybanpac we invest in the care and regeneration of the soil, we optimize the use of water. In this, technology allows us to have intelligent equipment for water and irrigation control, water sterilizing filters that prevent the entry of bacteria and fungi to our plantations, unmanned equipment for phytosanitary control, among other actions”.
For her part, Veronique Chavanne highlighted the quality of Ecuador's export products and that the country has the potential to continue expanding its offer to new markets: “By joining the efforts of the private sector, whether small, medium or large companies, with the public sector, we will have a large window of opportunity to better position ourselves globally.
Wong concluded by emphasizing the need for entrepreneurs to constantly reinvent themselves. We must ask ourselves: “How can I do it better? How can I serve better? And always think about how to respond to the needs of the markets”.
