Raising awareness among the population about environmental issues and promoting actions to protect the environment is a relevant task for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In line with this, through the Wong Foundation, we work to promote the importance of caring for the environment from childhood and youth.
With this objective in mind, “Guardians of Río Palenque” was born in 2023. This initiative seeks that the students of the foundation learn about the importance of conserving the natural environment that surrounds them through educational projects and visits to our protected forest “Río Palenque Scientific Center”.
Ricardo Romero, director of the foundation, highlights the effect that the experience of contact with nature has on young people. “This experience is very valuable because it helps to raise awareness among the kids. It allows us to foster in them a greater respect for the species and the ecosystem of the area, in addition to motivating them to become more committed to caring for the environment”.
This program is aimed at students in the eighth year of elementary school and third year of high school, who also participate in the development of environmental projects that can be applied in their schools. For example, with the help of tutors, the students created a plan to optimize energy and water resources, as well as waste management at the Dr. Segundo Wong Mayorga Educational Unit.
The objective is for the students to multiply the impact by sharing the knowledge acquired into their homes and communities, which is essential for raising environmental awareness and modeling behaviors and actions that favor the natural environment. In this way, we train leaders in rural areas that generate a positive impact on society.
At Reybanpac we will continue to train people committed to the well-being and sustainable development of the country's rural areas, thus contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
